Octifest on the Beach a success

April 18, 2019
Island Reporter, Captiva Current, Sanibel-Captiva Islander

Octifest on the Beach is the Sanibel Sea School’s annual fundraiser, held bayside under a big top tent on the Sanibel Causeway. This year’s event, held on April 13, was a success. More than 250 guests enjoyed a cocktail hour with sunset views, live and silent auctions, a delicious dinner, and stargazing. For the first time ever, the evening also featured a scavenger hunt designed to help participants learn more about the organization’s mission, vision and partnerships. For more about the annual event, visit sanibelseaschool.org or call 239-472-8585.

“We are so grateful for the support of our community members,” Executive Director Dr. Bruce Neill said. “They make it possible for us to provide meaningful ocean experiences for so many children who would not have that opportunity otherwise.”

John Grey Painting is proud to support The Sanibel Sea School.  John Grey also serves as a member of the board of trustees.

“We believe in supporting continuing education,” added Nate Grey. “We pursue ongoing education at John Grey Painting and are happy to be part of launching a new scholarship program.”

“John Grey Painting is a great community supporter, and has done so much to lift up Sanibel,” said Marty Short of Donald Short & Associates Insurance and ABWA Gala Chair. “We’re very excited about the auction items that have been donated to the Gala, including a valuable gift certificate from John Grey Painting. CECI, John Grey Painting team up to recycle play structure

Students at the Children’s Education Center of the Islands are grateful for the support of John Grey Painting in painting their old play structure to make it look brand new – reduce, reuse, recycle.

The playground had a play structure that, while still fully functional, stood out like a sore thumb. It was large and blue with faded red handles. Tearing the structure down was discussed, but the opportunities it offered the students in improving their gross motor skills with climbing and balancing, as well as the creative play – imagining that the play structure was a pirate ship or submarine – were unmatched.

Director Cindy DeCosta discussed with John Grey the possibility of painting it using special paint that would adhere to the plastic and withstand the hot Florida sun. Grey aid said it would be no problem.

“It’s important to us to support our neighbors,” he said. “We are happy to partner with The Children’s Education Center and be a small part in creating a positive learning environment for island kids.”

In an effort to reduce the amount of plastic that the preschool uses, students bring in their own water bottle daily and parents are encouraged to pack their children’s lunches using reusable containers.

“The Children’s Education Center truly appreciates the generosity of John Grey Painting in helping us with our dilemma,” DeCosta said. “While it may be an easy paint job for them, allowing us to fulfill one of our nature school objectives is huge to us. It allowed us to save a substantial amount of money as well as reduce, reuse and recycle.”

For more information, contact DeCosta at 472-4538 or cindy@childrenseducationcenter.com.

John Grey Paints Playground of Children’s Education Center of the Islands

We were happy to be able to support The Children’s Education Center of the Islands by donating a portion of the painting cost for their playground.

The Children’s Education Center of the Islands has had their doors open for young children for the past 44 years. If you ask most local islanders, their children have attended CECI at one point or another. Generations of families have trusted CECI with the growth, development, and well-being of their children. Over those four decades, many alumni have since returned to the preschool with children of their own attending. One can imagine that over time, CECI has changed and evolved in many different ways. From the color of the walls to the lessons within the classroom, one thing stands true; CECI is a school of constant nurturing and stability. CECI is currently shifting their teaching pedagogy to be centered more around the natural world. While maintaining a high-quality early childhood education program, the school will also focus on environmental educational practices. They will still have all of the same child development goals that more traditional schools have, but they will be committed to accomplishing those goals in and with nature. CECI is currently in the process of redesigning their playground and children’s garden to better fit with the school’s evolving vision! Being a non-profit organization, fundraisers and generous donations from the community help this family school make these wonderful changes.
